Damp Control Case Study

Damp Control Case Study

Product News Thursday, August 31, 2017: Mimic Components CC

SEGMENT: Structural waterproofing, damp proofing, and condensation.

INDUSTRY: Property surveyors, contractors, builders, and engineering consultants.

 The challenge

Many properties face damp and condensation issues often making waterproofing and damp control treatment difficult to establish. Is it a structural problem or can opening a window to air out excess air solve the issue? Condensation and mould in buildings are on the increase with many complaints arising from complex and townhouse residents.

The solution

The use of an environmental data logger and a thermocouple logger with a surface mount sensor which provides accurate surface measuring of wall temperatures. These loggers are protected against ingress from water and dust and are supplied as a complete kit, with free software. The logging devices allow users to capture data and then download the stored readings by plugging the module into a PC’s USB port. Relative humidity, temperature, and dew point (the temperature at which water vapour present in the air begins to condense) can then be graphed, printed, and exported to other applications.

The Products

EL-USB-2 Data Logger

This is a data logger for measuring temperature and relative humidity, inside and outside the property.

EL-USB-TC Data Logger

This is a temperature data logger used in conjunction with the surface temperature probe, for measuring the temperature of walls where damp and condensation occurs.

The Results

Using data logging equipment to measure humidity and temperature regularly inside and outside properties over a set period of time can help build a picture of why condensation and mould is occurring and can also assist in determining the resident’s contribution to the internal environment. Gathering accurate details over a prolonged period by placing the loggers in a residents’ house gives us a full circle view of the property’s humidity at different times of the day, over several days. The opportunity to record and review results followed by the necessary repairs improves the buildings structure and gives audit satisfaction based on regularly monitored information.
