Boeing Announces Development of the Worlds Longest-Range Passenger Jet

Boeing Announces Development of the Worlds Longest-Range Passenger Jet

Company News Thursday, July 18, 2013: Tech Steel & Materials

Boeing has officially entered the ring in the “longest-ranged passenger” division of aircraft manufacturing. Facing off against long time, long -range champion, the Airbus A350-1000. Boeing began showing airlines blue prints for the currently code named Boeing 777X on Wednesday May 1st.

The 777X is the newest model concept under the widely popular 777 wide-body jet line. First seen in the 1990s, the 777 cornered the market for large twin-engine aircraft because the 777 was able to fly routes only possible with four engines, using two. The 777 line is well known in the aerospace industry as the “mini-jumbo.” Most Analysts also consider the 777 to be Boeings most profitable plane, thanks largely to the 777-300ER, a 365-seat version that began operations in 2004.

Experts claim that ultra-long range planes offer mixed benefits to airlines. Longer flights normally mean that planes must be larger to carry extra fuel and have added weight due to their larger structure. However due to costs cuts on fuel consumption on takeoff and landings, airlines will need to look at the cost savings over time in using the more efficient long-range jets.

How will the new line of 777 be received by passenger airlines? Only time will tell. But from the buzz coming out of the industry already and the fact that Boeing is actively working with airlines to tweak the final designs of their newest jetliner it seems clear that changes are on the horizon.
